Sr. Carolyn Martin, LSP on The Moth

Two years ago, I had an idea. Now, whenever I get an idea, everyone around the office gets a little scared. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes my ideas are great – but they are also a little wild. I like to think big and am not afraid to try.

I had been a serious listener of The Moth Radio Hour for quite a few years before I started working for SisterStory and the Hilton Sisters Project. I enjoy listening to a good story almost as much as I like telling a good story.

Anyway, back to that idea of mine. We were trying to think of a keynote event to kick off the first National Catholic Sisters Week celebration. What we wanted to do was take sisters and make them accessible. To have young women understand that sisters are not that different from themselves, and that sisters’ lives are often quite similar to those of young people. And it came to me – why don’t we collaborate with The Moth Radio Hour to have an afternoon of sister storytelling – SisterStories, we called it! We reached out to the people at the Moth, who were more than willing to work with us – and off we went.

March 8, 2014. A darkened stage, with the every so lovely Catie Jo Pidel playing away on in a spotlight next to a microphone. With Soledad O’Brien as our host, we were led through wonderfully diverse stories from four sisters. We gasped as Sr. Julia told us how she fell down into a ravine while out on her family’s property, alone physically but not spiritually. We laughed as Sr. Julie told us of her studies in nun footwear during the early months of her discernment. Sr. Tierney spoke of her ministry and how it had impacted her life and the lives of those around her. And we sat there enthralled while Sr. Carolyn talked about how difficult it was to tell her boyfriend that she was going to become a sister.

Garrett Tiedemann, our Digital Media Strategist, recorded those sessions and provided the audio to the Moth in hopes that they would release them, either as single episodes on their website or as part of the Moth Radio Hour Podcast. What a great way to share these women’s inspirational, humbling and funny stories with the world!

Well, Garrett and I are so excited to announce that the story told by Sr. Carolyn Martin, LSP was released this past week as part of The Moth’s special Valentine’s Day episode. We couldn’t be more thrilled!

Enjoy listening to Sr. Carolyn’s story!
