Every Sister's Story Is A Woman's Story.
They Open Doors For Us.
SisterStory is the ongoing story of National Catholic Sisters Week, a national campaign aimed at broadening awareness of Catholic sisters. Our intention is to demystify religious life - the vows of poverty, celibacy and obedience, the experience of living in community, the desire to belong totally to God - by sharing the stories of Catholic sisters. We aim to connect sisters with young women and to share their impressions in an authentic, first-person 20-something voice.
From Spring 2014 – Spring 2017, college students across the country conducted oral histories with women religious. In total, over 180 oral histories were conducted, representing 25 communities of women religious in over 20 locations across the country. This makes us one of the largest repositories of digital (audio and video) oral histories of women religious in the country. The oral histories were conducted using an in-depth, and completely customizable, question list developed by our project oral historian, Louise Edwards-Simpson.
The archive will be continually updated as more are collected.
